SPEAK UP: HOW TO SUPPORT UPCOMING ARTISTS WITHOUT MONEY

Speaking Up

Today, let us talk about: HOW TO SUPPORT UPCOMING ARTISTS WITHOUT MONEY

  1. Family
  1. You’re probably the first to witness your family member fulfill his/her dream. Be sure to give your undivided attention when needed.
  2. Be mindful: It takes a lot of courage for an upcoming artist to put himself/herself out there for the world to see.
  3. Give constructive criticism from love for his/her craft; not constructive criticism from what the world may think of his/her craft. Huge difference.
  4. Either be there for the entire journey or don’t be there at all.
  5. Bragging about his/her craft to others, because he/she are related to you is not okay. If you were not working hard with him/her; you don’t deserve to reap what he/she have sown.
  6. Challenge him/her to do things outside of his/her comfort zone.
  1. Friends
  1. You are the first (besides family) who he/she (artist) will open up to about his/her vision/dreams. Don’t make him/her regret telling you.
  2. Listen to his/her vision before stating your opinion.
  3. Don’t compare him/ her to any other artist. There’s only one of him/her.
  4. Either be there for the entire journey or don’t be there at all.
  5. Bragging about his/her craft to others, because he/she are your friend is not okay. If you were not working hard with him/her; you don’t deserve to reap what he/she have sown.
  1. The Power of Moral Support
  1. Social Media- Every time the artist posts about his/her craft, REACT TO IT! Like it, share it, comment under his/her post.
  2. Word of mouth is powerful. Let your friends, coworkers, etc. know about this upcoming artist.
  3. Ask the artist for his/her business cards, flyers, contact information. Pass them all out like your life depended on it.
  4. Find venues/events for the artist to participate in.
  5. Promote his/her upcoming events via social media/word of mouth/email/phone/etc.
  6. Wear his/her merchandise (if he/she has any).
  7. Give them a genuine feedback.
  8. Challenge him/her to do things outside of his/her comfort zone.
  9. Be his/her audience behind the scene.
  10. Volunteer for projects that require "extras"
  11. Let the artist borrow equipment if you have what they need to complete a project.
**Artists are passionate about their work. DO NOT DOWNPLAY THEIR VISION.
**When artists promote themselves, encourage them. 9 out of 10 times, they are their only support.
**When the artist wins, you win!!! (They think of their loved ones as a whole).
